Running Out of Time is a book that could fall into several categories: science fiction, historical fiction, and contemporary realistic fiction. It is the story of thirteen-year-old Jessie. When an epidemic hits her tiny village in 1840, Jessie is concerned. She is really upset when she learns it is actually 1996 and the village is actually a science project being conducted by scientists. Jessie is determined to save the children of the village. This would be a great fiction book to suggest to students when learning about diseases in life science or historical epidemics in social studies. It is ideal for a middle school setting but would also be of interest to late elementary readers. This book is extremely interesting and entertaining and would lead to many class discussion about current issues.
